The inspiration for this mandala series was a simple and beautiful rose.
First, I created a bright three-color mono type print using the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow). For this process, I took a glass plate and rolled it with one color. Then I "painted" with negative space by removing color from the plate using q-tips, cardstock, and tissue to create an image of a rose. Then I rolled it through the press. I did this three times, with three different plates of color (red, yellow, and blue), and rolled each one onto the same sheet of paper to get an interesting blend of colors; and, voila!-- a beautiful rose was born. From here, I scanned the image, and used Photoshop to rotate layers of the original image to create a series of mandalas. I implemented several hue and layer opacity changes, too, to create many color variations and depth.
This is one of my favorite multi-media creative processes: taking something with an already super involved analog process and playing with it just a little in the digital realms, mostly just by mirroring or rotating layers of the original. The finished piece still maintains that original feel and texture of the handmade, but with a couple added dimensions.
